Sudan stands at a dire crossroads. Recent revelations have exposed horrifying atrocities committed against innocent civilians in several regions—including Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and western Sudan. Disturbing eyewitness reports confirm that the Sudanese Armed Forces have deployed internationally banned chemical and biological weapons in densely populated civilian areas.
On May 23, 2025, the U.S. government issued a landmark condemnation of these grave violations, calling for an immediate and impartial international investigation. The statement holds Sudan’s military leadership directly responsible for war crimes and acts of genocide—clear breaches of the Geneva Conventions and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Eyewitnesses describe scenes of mass suffocation, severe and unusual burns, and complex, long-lasting health effects. These accounts reveal a growing humanitarian crisis with devastating consequences for public health.

This crisis unfolds against a backdrop of escalating armed conflict and widespread abuses targeting civilians—extrajudicial killings, mass detentions, sexual violence, looting, and terror campaigns. The collapse of state authority has brought about a total breakdown of the rule of law.
The international community cannot stand by any longer. Silence is complicity. Hesitation is complicity.
We, the Sudanese Human Rights Association – U.S. Branch, urgently call for:
- A firm condemnation of the use of banned chemical and biological weapons against civilians.
- The immediate establishment of a neutral international investigation committee under United Nations supervision.
The people of Sudan deserve justice, protection, and peace. It is time for decisive global action.
