In refugee settlements like Kiryandongo, the stories of displacement are not just about loss—they are about survival in the face of injustice, vulnerability, and voicelessness. When people are forced to flee their countries, like the many Sudanese refugees now in Uganda, they leave behind not only homes, schools, and communities, but also their legal protections. In their new environments, many don’t know their rights, and even fewer know how to exercise them.
That’s where the power of legal aid and human rights awareness becomes life-changing.
During SHRA’s recent visit to Cluster C in Kiryandongo Refugee Camp, one of the critical needs raised by residents was the lack of understanding about their legal status, protection rights, and what to do when violations occur. From issues of unlawful evictions and denial of services to gender-based violence and bureaucratic delays, refugees often face these challenges alone. Many are unaware of their right to report, to seek help, or to advocate for themselves and their families.
Standing before a group of over 200 refugees, SHRA’s Country Director spoke passionately about the organization’s mission: to educate and empower displaced communities through legal awareness and human rights training. SHRA is now working to initiate paralegal training workshops and awareness campaigns, equipping refugees with the knowledge and confidence to navigate legal systems, access justice, and protect their dignity.
Legal empowerment in refugee settings does more than solve problems—it transforms lives. It helps people reclaim their voice, their agency, and their future. When a mother learns that she can report abuse without fear of deportation, or when a youth discovers he has the right to education and safety, something remarkable happens: hope is restored, and injustice is challenged.
SHRA is proud to stand at the front lines of this effort, offering not just services, but a sense of possibility. We believe that when refugees know their rights, they can shape their own futures and hold those in power accountable. Legal education is a tool of peace, protection, and empowerment.
As we continue to grow this mission, we invite donors, partners, and advocates to join us. Every training conducted, every voice empowered, and every injustice exposed brings us one step closer to a world where even the most vulnerable are protected, respected, and empowered.
Because when knowledge becomes power, the powerless are no longer voiceless.
